Mental Health FAQs
-
Psychotherapy is a structured, supportive space where children, teens, or adults can explore their thoughts, emotions, and experiences with a trained mental health professional.
For children, this may include play-based or creative approaches that allow them to process feelings in developmentally appropriate ways. For teens and adults, psychotherapy often focuses on building coping tools, increasing emotional insight, improving relationships, and navigating life transitions or stress.
At Wonderstruck Child and Family Centre, psychotherapy is collaborative and compassionate. We meet kids and families where they are at and work together to build practical tools that support emotional resilience and long-term wellbeing.

You do not have to be in crisis to benefit from therapy.
Many people reach out when they feel overwhelmed, stuck, anxious, disconnected, or unsure how to move forward. Others come because something feels “off,” even if they cannot fully explain it. Therapy is not only for emergencies. It is a space to understand yourself more clearly and build the tools to navigate life with greater confidence.
You might consider therapy if:
You or your child feel anxious, sad, irritable, or easily overwhelmed
Big life changes have left you feeling unsettled
Conflict at home feels repetitive or hard to resolve
Parenting feels heavier than it should
Your child is struggling at school or socially
You want to break patterns that no longer serve you
You simply want support from someone outside your immediate circle
Therapy is not about being “broken.” It is about having a safe, professional space to reflect, process, and grow.
At Wonderstruck Child and Family Centre, we believe therapy supports the whole child and the whole family. Sometimes the bravest step is not fixing everything at once — it is reaching out and starting the conversation.
If you are wondering whether therapy could help, that curiosity alone is often a sign that support may be meaningful.
-
At Wonderstruck Child and Family Centre, your first step is a free 15-minute consultation. This is a brief, low-pressure conversation to determine whether the therapist feels like a good fit for you or your child before moving forward with longer sessions.
It is not therapy yet. It is an opportunity to ask questions, share what has brought you here, and get a sense of how the therapist works.
If you choose to continue, your first full session will focus on getting to know you more deeply. Your therapist will ask thoughtful questions to understand your concerns, goals, and what support might look like. You are always invited to share at your own pace. There is no pressure to say everything at once.
If the session is for your child, the therapist will connect in a developmentally appropriate way, which may include conversation, play, drawing, or other creative activities. Building safety and comfort is always the priority.
You can expect:
A clear explanation of confidentiality
Space to ask questions
A collaborative discussion of goals and next steps
A respectful, non-judgmental environment
It is completely normal to feel nervous. Many people leave their first conversation feeling relieved simply because they have taken that first step and no longer have to carry everything alone.
-
Yes. Completely.
Starting therapy means talking about things that matter. It can feel vulnerable to share your thoughts, your worries, or parts of your story with someone new. Feeling nervous does not mean you are not ready. It usually means you care.
Many people tell us they almost cancelled their first appointment because of nerves. Almost all of them say they felt relieved once they began.
Therapy moves at your pace. You are never required to share more than you feel comfortable sharing. A good therapist understands that trust is built gradually, and the first priority is helping you feel safe.
If you are feeling nervous, you are not alone. It is a very human response to doing something new and meaningful. Often, that first step is also the beginning of something supportive and steady.

Our approach is collaborative, compassionate, and evidence-based. We draw from established therapeutic models while tailoring our work to each child and family.
We prioritize building trust and safety first. From there, we focus on developing emotional insight, coping strategies, communication tools, and resilience. For younger children, this may include play-based work. For teens, it may involve identity exploration and skill building. For families, it often includes strengthening connection and practical parenting strategies.
We believe change happens when children feel safe, parents feel supported, and everyone feels heard.
